OKLAHOMA COUNTY (KFOR) – Darra King Roberson begins his mornings shortly after daylight and usually ends them just before sunset.
“The mounds there are really fresh,” she points out.
With a shovel in one hand, a trap in the other, she’s a Gopher Girl whose name is Oklahoma.
Describing the damage these grassland pests can cause, Roberson says, “They dig along buried pipes and wires. They get underneath your house. They will push dirt up under your tub. “
Her uncle has no idea what he’s up to when he asks Darra and her sister as teenagers to help him with a few traps.
She recalls her uncle and father both saying to her, “‘Darra, you’re going to have to learn how to put these things together so you can help us.” I was like, “Okay!”
That was all there was.
Nothing else really traps her after that.
“I just thought it was fun,” she laughed.
Darra admits she was a sleepy student at school.
A short-lived banking career was also unsuccessful.
So she’s going back to what she knows, taking her mousetrap business seriously in May 2021.
Gopher Girl is a lady, dedicated to pest control with a hint of femininity – note the pink markers – feel.
“The best part,” she admitted, “was pulling out the gophers.”
Her notebook is filled with appointments throughout Oklahoma County.
She checks traps or sets them all day.
“Eighteen houses a day,” she boasted. “On a gentle day, I’ll do 12.”
The gophers she’s trapped are accidental co-stars in a series of unique selfies she shares on social media.
“I would recommend them to my clients,” she said.
Darra then packs them up and delivers the carcasses to the prairie fishers who order them.
Nothing is wasted.
No opportunity to promote her business is never lost.
“When you see gophers in your neighborhood, who do you call?” she quotes. “Gopher Girl!”
The gopher trap business is booming for Roberson.
She recently hired a secretary to help answer phones and make reservations for new clients.
