Many people mistake the dazzling shooting star for a UFO.

Paula Leonard, from Hull, said: ‘It was a big green ball of light with a long white tail.

“At first I thought it was a firework, but it was too big and went downhill.”

The meteor burned from the northeast over Hull but was seen across the country at around 6:45pm on Saturday.

Sam Clapp of Bristol said: “Fantastic. It’s bright and fast.”

Penny Hogg saw it near Edinburgh. “There’s a bright orange tail, then you see pieces of flint falling apart,” she said.

The UK’s Fireball Network said yesterday: “It is a meteorite from the outer asteroid belt.

“It’s unusual for its orbit to pass Mercury, which explains why it’s going so fast, 31.7km/s. Sadly, no meteorite survived, it burned up 38 km”.

Meteorites are space rocks that burn up in Earth’s atmosphere.

An explosion about four miles away in 1908 devastated the remote Tunguska region of Siberia with a 12-megaton explosion.
