A flight attendant helped deliver an ‘unexpected’ baby mid-flight

This baby is cleared for take off!

A Frontier Airlines flight attendant helped give birth to a woman during a cross-country flight – and went “beyond” after the mother-to-be woke up from a nap in severe labor pains, airline officials said.

“The baby couldn’t wait, so the early and unexpected labor took place on a flight from Denver International Airport to Orlando International Airport,” the airline posted on Facebook.

That’s what flight attendant Diana Giraldo used “exemplarily” and “calmly” as she helped expectant mother Shakeria Martin into a back toilet where she gave birth to a newborn baby girl.

“The entire crew did a really great job,” said Captain Chris Nye, who diverted the 3-hour flight to Pensacola International Airport to meet the waiting paramedics. “It was good work and I was glad everyone worked together to successfully deliver a newborn on an airplane!”

Martin told NBC’s Today show she didn’t expect the in-flight emergency and nodded off mid-air.

“I was feeling fine and all, so I went to sleep and woke up and my contractions were, yeah,” Martin said. “The first thought that went through my head was that this can’t happen now. It can’t be, there’s no way I can just have that baby on the plane.”

But the newborn girl, Jada Lynn Sky, had other plans and made Martin a mother of four a little sooner than expected. The baby’s middle name is a nod to the unforeseen in-flight birth.

“It’s a beautiful thing to bring life into the world,” said Diana Giraldo.

“I go to the bathroom and like, two big pushes and the baby comes out,” Martin said.

Nye had turned flight duties to a first officer while Giraldo and the rest of the crew ushered Martin to an aft bathroom.

“I’m an older sister,” Giraldo told NBC. “And so I saw this young woman for me, she was scared, she was uncomfortable. I had no room for doubt. I just had to make sure I was there for her.”

The crew immediately snapped to attention when the mother woke up in heavy labor.

The newborn initially had trouble breathing, so Giraldo wrapped it in a blanket and held it at an angle to remove any obstructing fluids.

“After a while, she started to react and regain color,” Giraldo said. “It’s a beautiful thing to bring life into the world.”

Martin, on the other hand, thanked the entire crew for their efforts.

“It made me feel much more comfortable,” Martin recalls.
