(Hill) – About 4 in 10 Republicans said in a new poll that they believe the January 6 attack on the Capitol was extremely or very violent.

The survey, conducted by Related press and NORC at the University of Chicago, showing that 39% of Republican adults said the events at the US Capitol on January 6 were extremely or very violent.

Thirty-two percent of Republican respondents said the events at the Capitol on January 6 were somewhat violent, and 29% said the events were either very violent or not violent at all.

Democrats, however, see the situation in a completely different light. According to the poll, 87% of Democrats say the events at the Capitol on January 6 were extremely or very violent, while just 1% said they were non-violent or non-violent at all. .

Overall, 64% of respondents said the events were extremely or very violent, and 14% said they were not too violent or not violent at all.

The results were released just days before the US was set to mark the one-year anniversary of the deadly riots on January 6, which have since deepened polarization in the US.

Recent polls have shown that Democrats and Republicans are at odds with each other on how to address the individuals who stormed the Capitol on January 6 and whether those involved in the riots threaten democracy.

The new AP-NORC poll also shows that the public largely supports the House select committee’s investigation into the January 6 attacks. 71% of respondents said Congress should continue to visit poll, while 28% said it shouldn’t.

Support is bipartisan, though Democrats are stronger: 96% of Democrats support the investigation, compared with 41% of Republicans.

However, fifty-eight percent of Republicans said the investigation should not continue.

The poll surveyed 1,089 adults from December 2 to December 7. The margin of sampling error was 4.1 percentage points.
