Police say a 15-year-old male student opened fire at a high school north of Detroit on Tuesday and shot and killed nine people.

During a press conference on Tuesday, authorities said that three students were killed in the shooting and six others were injured, including a teacher.

Police responded around 12:55 p.m. to a report of an active shooter at Oxford High School in Oxford Township, a suburb north of Detroit.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office says a suspect is in custody and a semi-automatic handgun was recovered.

Tim Throne, Director of the Oxford Community Academy, “I am shocked, this is horrible.”

Several ambulances and dozens of police officers were outside the high school after the shooting. A University of Michigan medical helicopter landed in the school parking lot around 2 p.m. ET.
