3 dead, dozen missing in Jersey island explosion

Three people were killed and around a dozen others are missing in an explosion early Saturday morning at a block of flats on the island of Jersey, off the coast of northern France.

“We now unfortunately have three deaths,” Jersey State Police Chief Officer Robin Smith said at a news conference.

The explosion occurred just before 4:00 GMT and the fire has since been extinguished. Emergency services will be searching for survivors throughout the night, Smith said.

He confirmed that firefighters were called to the property Friday night before the blast after residents reported smelling of gas. He did not comment on the cause of the blast and said it was being investigated.

Smith said a three-story building near the harbor in the island’s capital, St. Helier, had collapsed completely.

He said 20 to 30 people had been evacuated and two “walking wounded” were being treated in hospital.

Jersey is a British Crown Dependency with a resident population of just over 100,000 people.
