136,000 Turbo Tax customers in NC are eligible for Settlement Funds

RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) – North Carolina citizens who were forced to pay the turbo tax to file their taxes are now entitled to get that money back.

Attorney General Josh Stein, along with 50 other attorney generals, won a more than $4 million settlement from Intuit Inc., TurboTax’s parent company. Turbo Tax is accused of tricking North Carolinians into paying for tax services that should have been free.

In total, the company is paying back $141 million to millions of consumers across the country. The company will also be forced to end its “free, free, free” advertising campaign.

Stein’s office said the advertisements lured people to free tax preparation services, only to end up making them pay for the services.

“I am pleased that nearly 140,000 affected North Carolinians are recovering some of the money they unnecessarily paid to file their tax returns. It doesn’t matter how big or small a company is, deception is not only unacceptable, it’s against the law,” said Attorney General Josh Stein.

About 139,000 North Carolinians who filed federal taxes through TurboTax between 2016 and 2018 are eligible for a refund of about $30.

According to Stein’s office, the dollar amount accounts for about 60 percent of the average annual fee consumers pay Intuit.

Eligible people will automatically receive notifications and payment.

Intuit withdrew from the IRS Free File program in July 2021.

Stein’s office reported that Intuit also agreed to reform its business practices by:

  • refraining from misrepresentation in connection with soliciting or offering online tax preparation products;
  • improving disclosure in the advertising and marketing of free products;
  • design its products to better inform users whether they are eligible to file their taxes for free; and
  • Refrain from requiring consumers to restart their tax returns when they leave one of Intuit’s paid products in order to use a free product instead.
