12-year-old Lee District student arrested for sending threatening text messages

LEE COUNTY

A Lee County student was arrested after sending a threatening text message to another student.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said on October 7, 2021, while on the bus home from school, a student received several text messages from an unknown number. The sheriff’s office said the messages threatened to shoot several students and rape another.

School Resource Officers and Youth Services Detectives have been notified and the texts are investigated.

Their investigation led them to arrest a 12-year-old student who attended the same school as the victim.

That student is currently facing charges of sending a written or electronic threat.

In a statement about the arrest, Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said, “My stance is the same as always – if you threaten violence or bring a weapon to school, you will go to jail.”
