Zach LaVine is the ninth Bulls player to join the COVID . protocol

As the 2021-22 NBA season enters its third month, any hope that the COVID-19 pandemic will have less of an impact this season than last season has been dashed. Many of the game’s top stars found themselves within the league’s health and safety protocols earlier this season, including some who have gone through hard battles with the virus that kept them out of the game for longer than just 10 days as per league rules.

The Chicago Bulls are facing a number of absences due to protocols at the moment, as seven players missed Saturday night’s game loss to the Heat due to health and safety protocols, including star DeMar DeRozan, and now the Bulls will be without their other star scorer as Zach LaVine joined the protocol on Sunday following his 33-point effort in Miami.

Troy Brown will also join the protocols, bringing the team’s total to the current nine.

The Bulls’ situation is the worst of any team in the league in terms of absences and it’s reasonable to wonder if the league, which is not interested in postponing any games this season due to COVID’s absence, should consider whether the nine-player absences deserve to be rescheduled Tuesday’s game against Detroit if some of Chicago’s players don’t out-of-protocol checks in time to play. The current squad, including those added through the difficulty exemption, has nine players, technical enough to play Tuesday.
