A Yonkers man has been charged with hate crimes when he brutally beat a 67-year-old Asian-American woman – who was kicked and punched more than 125 times while calling her an “Asian slut,” officials said.
Tammel Esco, 42, has been charged with assault and attempted murder in Friday night’s horrific attack – counting the entire assault captured on surveillance video.
“This is one of the most appalling attacks I have ever witnessed,” Yonkers Police Commissioner John Mueller said in a statement. “Beating a helpless woman is despicable, and targeting her because of her race makes it worse.”
Esco spat out the racial slur when the woman walked past him outside her Yonkers apartment building just after 6pm on Friday, police officers said.
He followed the victim to the front door of the building and attacked her from behind, unleashing a brutal barrage of punches and kicking her seven times.
The horrifying footage shows the woman falling to the ground as her attacker continues to hit her repeatedly after she is prone and crouching.
She suffered brain hemorrhage, facial fractures and multiple lacerations to her head and face, Westchester County prosecutors said in a news release.
She was recorded in stable condition at a hospital in the region.
“Our hearts are broken for the victim,” Westchester District Attorney Mimi Roach said in a statement.
“We also understand that many in the community may be experiencing fear and trauma as a result of this incident,” Rocah said. “We will continue our work with our community and government partners across the county….”
Esco was arrested after the attack and charged with second-degree assault and attempted second-degree murder on Saturday, prosecutors said.
On Monday he was hit by a new criminal complaint alleging both counts of hate crimes, both violent crimes, prosecutors said.
Esco is being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court again on March 25.
“Hate crimes are beyond intolerable in our city,” Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said in a statement. “I expect the suspect to be charged to the fullest extent of the law for his heinous actions. I continue to keep the victim and her family in our thoughts and prayers.”
