Here are some notable nuggets that happened along the way Yankees spring training on Friday:
baseball is back
The Yankees played their first spring training game after a 99-day lockout, starting with right-hander Hayden Wesneski. Wesneski, who’s had a solid 2021 season, threw three strong innings and opened his eyes with a nasty slider.
In the focus of attention
Ender Inciarte, who was at camp on a minor league deal to maybe win a fourth outfielder berth, lost a ball in the sun at center to a Cole Tucker triple. He also went 0-for-3. Brett Gardner remains without a contract.
Anthony Volpe wore the number 70 in his first Grapefruit League game, the same jersey number worn by Derek Jeter in spring 1995. It’s not the first and won’t be the last comparison between the two shortstops.
The schedule for Saturday
The Yankees visit the Orioles at 1:05 p.m. at Ed Smith Stadium. Josh Donaldson is expected to play as a Yankee in his first Grapefruit League game, and Oswald Peraza – who could work his way into the shortstop mix sometime later this season – is also expected to make the trip.
