Yankees’ Brian Cashman ‘not worried’ about struggling Joey Gallo

Despite poor results in the Bronx since arriving last July, Joey Gallo still has faith in general manager Brian Cashman.

“I’m not worried about Joey Gallo,” Cashman said before the Yankees took on the Blue Jays at the stadium on Wednesday.

“He’s a really talented player and he cares a lot about it,” Cashman said. “Every time he’s on the plate, he has a chance to change what happened before.”

Back in left field Wednesday, Gallo averaged .166 and .682 OPS as a Yankee after arriving in Texas with averages of .211 and .833 OPS in seven seasons.

So far this season, Gallo is hitting base less than ever (0.293 OBP) and his performance has declined (0.324 slugging percentage).

Cashman added he’s encouraged by how well the Yankees are doing without much production from Gallo, who he says has “a lot of gas in the tank in terms of contributions that I think are still up for grabs.”

And he pointed to his current manager, Aaron Boone, as an example of how a narrative can change quickly.

Boone joined the Yankees in 2003 in the middle of an All-Star year with Cincinnati and mostly collapsed for the remainder of the regular season.

In the midst of a tough postseason, Boone hit his famous home run against Boston’s Tim Wakefield in Game 7 of the ALCS to send the Yankees into the World Series.

“Boone really struggled, but he’ll go down in history for hitting the bat,” Cashman said. “Gallo helps us defensively and offensively he can help with a key gear. There are many different ways he can contribute. And he still has a hell of a lot of time to contribute in a big game, in a big series or in a floodgate success avalanche. He’s certainly capable of that…I think over time he’ll find that higher ground on a consistent basis.” Yankees’ Brian Cashman ‘not worried’ about struggling Joey Gallo
