Purchase Xbox Game Pass Plays for its catalog frequently, but the exact amount it gives developers was purposely vague, to say the least. However, a new financial report from developer Big Cheese Studio has revealed that Microsoft allegedly paid a lump sum of $600,000 to purchase Cooking Simulator for the Xbox subscription service. Given recent rumors that Sony may have blocked Xbox Game Pass from receiving Cult of the Lamb, this offers a glimpse into the underlying battle between Xbox Game Pass and Sony’s PlayStation Plus.
Why Big Cheese Studio Accepted the Xbox Game Pass Offer
After Big Cheese Studio published the original report in Polish via Google Translate, Big Cheese Studio notes that an agreement was reached with Microsoft on August 5, 2022 to have Cooking Simulator on Xbox Game Pass for “$600,000”. For this indie studio, that cash injection was “approximately 22% of the company’s net income and approximately 17% of its net income from the sale of products, merchandise and materials for the most recent fiscal year.”
Considering Big Cheese Studio is an indie creator and Cooking Simulator was released more than three years ago on June 6th, 2019, it’s no wonder the developer took the money. A chart on SteamDB shows that only about 200-250 concurrent users are playing the game, which only makes this blanket purchase all the more enticing. It’s unclear how long Cooking Simulator will be on Xbox Game Pass and if this deal means the game can’t be available on other subscription services, but that sort of exclusivity wouldn’t be out of left field.
Developer Stephen Danton explained on The Duel Screens Podcast that Xbox Game Pass also purchased Unto the End as “an amount of money at launch”. The game was then exclusive to Xbox Game Pass for six months and was not available on any other streaming/subscription-based service during that time. For a comparison to AAA games on Xbox Game Pass, Senior Analyst at MST Financial David Gibson said in a tweet in March that Microsoft “paid about $5 million to $10 million for Guardians of the Galaxy for Games Pass.”
In other news, Toys for Bob has confirmed that it is working on a new game that could be Wumpa League and a new Dune game could be revealed soon.
