Worms NFTs canceled after backlash

Yesterday, Team17 announced that they are collaborating with Reality Gaming Group to create a series of NFTs based on Worms Franchising. However, in an extremely quick turnaround, the publisher has now announced that they will be canceling the limited edition ‘MetaWorms’ NFTs following backlash from their fans, development partners, and even even their employees.

Why were MetaWorms NFTs delisted?

Team17 claims that MetaWorms NFTs have significantly reduced the amount of energy used per transaction, so they will be “environmentally friendly”. Unfortunately, this is a claim that many of their developer partners do not believe. Overdo developer Game Ghost Town confirmed that they do not support NFT and that they believe they have incurred “excessive environmental and social costs”. Yooka-Laylee developer Playtonic followed by a statement that they do not endorse the use of NFT in “any aspect of their business”. Others to condemn the move include Go under developer Crab Aggro who even went so far as to announce that they would not work with Team17 in other titles unless the decision was reversed.

Statements that made Group17 confirm Eurogamer they “have no plans to introduce NFT or monetized NFT play into any of its indie titles.” Despite this, criticism from fans and Team17 team members led to the project’s cancellation today. Team17 said:

Team17 today announced the end of the MetaWorms NFT project. We have listened to the people on our team, our development partners, and the gaming community, and the concerns they have expressed, and have therefore made the decision to withdraw from the NFT space.

Instead, the project will see the creation of standalone MetaWorms NFTs based on artwork from the entire 26 years of Worms Franchising. The partnership with Coin 4 Planet will also see a portion of every sale redirected to Refeed Farms, who use vertical worm beds to supplement soil in lieu of fertilizer. However, this will not happen again.

In other news, Monday Free cross missions came Far Cry 6 Today, take Dani into a wits battle against the army alongside a rabid fan of Rambo.
