World Juniors Presents Exciting Prospects for the Chicago Blackhawks

The National Hockey League has some issues with COVID-19 right now. The result is, Chicago Blackhawks (and every other team) had an extended Christmas break. The next chance to (for now) see the NHL return is Tuesday. However, the sport of hockey is not completely paused right now.

World Youth Championship starting today, that means all the countries with the best hockey in the world will present their best prospects. This is a very important tournament as most of these players will either be transferred to the NHL someday or have already been enlisted.

Team USA won the Gold Medal in 2021 with a hugely impressive win over Team Canada. There are some who think that Team Canada is the greatest junior roster ever assembled, and Team America took care of them in the Gold Medal Game. It will be great to see them defend their crown but this year’s team is very different, especially in the net.

Spencer Knight was the star in 2021 but he now plays for the Florida Panthers. Dustin Wolf isn’t bad either. This year, potential Blackhawks customer Drew Commesso was among the leaders. He’s an amazing young player that Chicago picked into the second round (46th overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft. They hope to one day soon see him wearing the beloved Blackhawks sweater midway through the pipeline.

The Chicago Blackhawks have some interesting prospects in the WJC.

Commesso isn’t the only prospect of the Blackhawks entering this tournament. He is one of four. He was joined by goalkeeper Wyatt Kaiser, defender Michael Krutil and forward Landon Slaggert. It’s a lesser known group of prospects, so it would be nice to see them make a big impact on the league.

Reaching their potential in the NHL would be great because it means Chicago is doing a good job of their development. They don’t win at the NHL level, which is a problem but one of the best ways to get back to winning is to use their multiple draft picks.

The tournament is being held in Edmonton and Red Deer. There are many interesting teams in this tournament filled with the best prospects in the world. Kids like Shane Wright, Connor Bedard and Matvei Michkov are all top leads entering their respective countries and could be the number one pick in a couple of upcoming matches.

Keeping an eye on guys like that is always interesting in the event that the Blackhawks find themselves in a major draft position which is certainly possible. This will indeed be a great tournament to watch as fans of the big picture of the sport. World Juniors Presents Exciting Prospects for the Chicago Blackhawks
