A WOMAN who has never even been to Scotland is furious after receiving a £400 bill for a property 200 miles from her actual home.
Christine Young, 69, was stunned when she received a bill from Scottish Gas asking her to pay hundreds of pounds – for a house she doesn’t live in.
A retired civil servant, from Droitwich, Worcester, has lived in his West Midlands home for 54 years and has never even been to Scotland.
She received a bill asking her to pay £424.53, but it was actually sent to James and Helen Young at their home in Gretna Green, Dumfriesshire.
Despite informing Scottish Gas of the expensive mix in April, Christine said she continues to be struck by reminders and eventual demands from the company.
The 69-year-old woman, who has never been married and has no children, said that despite sharing her last name, she has no ties to the Scottish couple or their home.
She explained: “I have never even been to Scotland but I keep getting letters asking to pay Scotland Gas £424.53.
“I started taking these bills in April for James and Helen Young, for a house on Cadgill Road, Gretna Green, in Dumfriesshire.
“All we shared was them, I don’t know them at all. I sent back the letter that said ‘not at this address’.
“The letters kept coming in and the bills started appearing in my account. I have a letter addressed to ‘Christine and Helen Young’.”
The frustrated host said she made “hundreds of calls”, taking up countless hours of her time as she “went through departments”.
Christine continued: “In one (of the calls), a woman said it was an obvious bug and would be looked into, but it was never classified.
“If anything gets worse – my ‘mail address’ has even been changed to a Gretna address on my online account now.”
The 69-year-old, who underwent heart surgery for high blood pressure in 2019, said how fed up she is with the ongoing condition that has tormented her for months.
The bill for this Scottish house has nothing to do with me – I don’t know anyone in Scotland, I’ve never been there.
“It happened so long ago, no one listened,” she said.
“You can never talk to someone. I’m stuck in their online chat for hours. I just want them to do something about it.
“I have a smart meter, I pay my home direct debit bills.
“The bill for this Scottish house has nothing to do with me – I don’t know anyone in Scotland, I’ve never been there.”
And to make her relationship with the company even worse, she says her actual bills from British Gas have begun to be sent to her and her late mother. who passed away in 2016.
“It really upsets me,” Christine added.
“When my mother passed away, I asked the company to remove her name from future correspondence but apparently that never happened.”
The owners of British Gas and Scotland Gas Centrica have apologized for the error.
