Woman shot dead in Kansas after opening fire on three lawmakers

A woman accused of shooting three sheriff’s deputies in Kansas on Thursday was killed by police officers during the shooting, authorities said.

The unidentified female suspect opened fire on the deputies from a car five miles outside of the town of Winfield, which is about 40 miles southeast of Wichita.

“Earlier this morning deputies were dispatched to the area regarding a suspicious vehicle,” Cowley County Sheriff Dave Falletti told KSN-TV from the side of a country road.

“Guns were exchanged during this contact. Three MPs were hit and one person who was in the vehicle died.”

The injured deputies were taken to a Wichita hospital and two of them were due to be released later in the day, officials said. The third victim was more seriously injured but was expected to recover.

The deceased woman was the only person in the car, and it’s unclear what sparked the shooting, Falletti said.
