Woman, 57, who never knew she was being adopted, reconnects with her birth mother after her adoptive mother’s death

A woman in her sixties makes a shocking discovery about herself. She was adopted and met her biological mother after a period of separation.

Cynthia O’Brien never imagined that she had six siblings living a short time away from her. She lives in Belvedere, South Carolina, and has an entire family she knows nothing about.

When her mother passed away in 2020, a family friend revealed a surprise. The woman who raised her was not her biological mother. O’Brien was 56 years old when She finds out the truth about her past for the first time.

O’Brien revealed various signs surrounding her birth that caused her to spark a few red flags, but she never took it seriously. She always wondered because her mother had purposely left town to give birth to her in Virginia.

While she had a peaceful childhood, her mother was not very emotional. In March of this year, she decided to do a DNA test. The results confirmed she was dating a Virginia woman.


She tried to contact her niece, who helped her contact her mother. O’Brien discovered her biological mother, Brenda Decatur, had put her up for adoption.

O’Brien expressed: “They’ve had a hard life, as I understand it.” Her newly formed family has many siblings. She is worried but happy to meet her mother and the rest of the family.

Initially, the couple chatted on the phone and realized they had a lot in common. They look alike, and they both love lighthouses. O’Brien to add:

“I think it’s important when you’re adopted that you know, even if you don’t tell them when they’re 11 or whatever, tell them when they’re grown-ups.”

O’Brien said not knowing the truth about her past confuses her. It felt as if she had been living a lie for a while, but now she could finally understand her identity.

This woman is still searching for her biological father and hopes to meet him one day. For now, she’s happy to reconnect with her mother and introduce her to her children, Kaycee and Tyler Williams.


Laura Mabry of Springdale, Arkansas, is another woman who adopted child like a baby. She began to wonder about her birth parents in her fifties. In 2019, she finally took a DNA test to reveal who they were.

She has located her biological mother, Donna Hornand shared that it was a life changing moment. She doesn’t realize the importance of reconnecting with her parents. She was grateful for the opportunity to get to know them because it had fulfilled something in her.
