Witness is helping police locate a suspected DWI driver who hit an HPD car on the North Freeway in Little York

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Bystanders helped lead officers to a suspected drunk driver after a Houston police officer was hit in a hit-and-run accident.

According to police, the accident happened just after 2 a.m. Monday on the North Freeway in Little York.

An HPD officer was on his way back to the police station after investigating a separate accident when a suspected drunk driver in a tan pickup truck crashed into the rear of the squad car while the officer was stopped at a traffic light and then, according to police left.

At first, the officer tried to follow him, but eventually he lost the suspect.

A witness saw what had happened and decided to step forward and help the officer.

“Luckily a witness was able to follow him at a distance and he made his way back to East Little York and drove home,” said Sgt. David Rose. “The officers were able to catch up with this vehicle and it stopped without swerving or offering any resistance.”

According to police, the suspected drunk driver is likely to be charged with drunk driving and failure to stop.

The police officer was not injured, HPD said.
