Winter Haven man charged after hacking university database and possessing child porn

POLK COUNTY, FL. – On Thursday, December 16, 2021, PCSO detectives arrested Brandon James Diaz, 38, of Winter Haven for breaking into a Polk State College student lab and scheduling database and possess child pornography.

In June 2021, a program coordinator and an instructor in the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) course program at Polk State College (PSC) began having difficulty logging in to the lab’s lab. them and schedule the account. During the password reset process, they discovered their password recovery suggestions had been changed to “Sold out” or “Ha Ha Ha lost”.

Detectives have identified the suspect as Brandon Diaz, whose Clinical Coordinator job was terminated from Polk State College’s EMS program in April 2021 following his termination from Regional Health Lakeland due to a failed drug test. He also worked as a Polk County firefighter/medical officer for 11 years before terminating his contract in 2015 for unprofessional behavior. Between 2015 and 2017 Diaz was employed by Poinciana Medical Center as a nurse.

In the interview with Diaz, he admitted to accessing the PSC database from his personal computer. He told detectives that he changed the passwords of the program coordinator and instructor because he blamed them for the termination of his contract. He also admitted to changing the admin rights of other accounts in the database. A total of ten accounts were spoofed.

During the investigation, detectives did not find any evidence of personally identifiable information being stolen.

Detectives served a warrant to search Diaz’s residence and seize his computer and, during a preview of the scene, found 75 child pornographic images.

Diaz told detectives he is currently employed as the Department of Emergencies’ Assistant Chief Nursing Officer with Advent Health Heart of Florida in Davenport.

“I am proud of the good work my detectives did in this case. If tampering with the information in the State College database wasn’t bad enough, he already had a massive amount of child pornography on his computer. It is ironic that our investigation ended up turning into a child pornography case.” – Grady Judd, Chief of Police

Diaz was arrested for Accessing a computer without permission (F3) (10 counts), Using a two-way device to commit a felony (F3) and Increased possession of child pornography (F2 ) (75 crimes). He is currently in the Polk County Jail and is not in custody.
