Will Smith Wins Oscar for Best Actor After Beating Chris Rock

Will Smith won the Oscar for best actor at the 2022 Academy Awards shortly after him beat Chris Rock in a dramatic scene on stage.

He received the award for his career in King Richard.

“Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family,” he said shortly after the wild scene.

“At this time in my life, at this moment, I am overwhelmed by what God is asking me to do and be in this world. In this film, I had to protect Aunjanue Ellis, who was one of the strongest and most tender people I’ve ever met. I have to protect Saniyya (Sidney) and Demi (Singleton), the two actresses who played Venus and Serena. I am called in my life to love and protect people and to be a flow for my people.”

Smith also said he has suffered disrespect throughout his career. “You have to smile, you have to pretend that’s okay,” he said.

He continued: “I know to do what we do you have to be able to take abuse, you have to be able to make people talk crazy about you. In this business you have to be able to be disrespected by people. And you have to smile and pretend that’s okay.”

He also noted that Denzel Washington gave him good advice after the punch.

“Denzel (Washington) said to me at the highest moment, be careful – then the devil will come for you. It’s like, I want to be a vessel for love.”

The rest of his speech got even more emotional.

“I would like to thank Venus and Serena and the entire Williams family for entrusting your story to me. I want to do that. I want to be an ambassador of that kind of love, care and concern. I would like to apologize to the academy. I would like to apologize to all my fellow candidates. This is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying for a price. I’m not interested in winning an award; it’s about being able to illuminate all people… Art mimics life; I looked like the crazy dad, just like they said about Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things. … to be able to love and care for my mother, my family, my wife … thank you for this honor, thank you for this moment. Thanks; I hope the academy will invite me again.”

He fought against Andrew Garfield, Benedict Cumberbatch, Denzel Washington and Javier Bardem.

Washington was nominated for his role in The Tragedy of Macbeth, while Cumberbatch was nominated for The Power of the Dog.

Garfield showcased his singing skills in Netflix’s ‘Tick, Tick…BOOM’ and Smith wowed fans with his role in ‘King Richard’. He was also stunned when he beat Chris Rockwho apparently joked about Jada Pinkett Smith being bald.

Bardem’s portrayal of Desi Arnaz in Being the Ricardos received recognition this awards season.
