Will Smith resigns from academy after beating Chris Rock at Oscars

Will Smith has resigned from the Oscars academy after slapping comedian Chris Rock in the face.

The actor faced disciplinary action such as possible expulsion or suspension from the academy.

Instead, he has chosen to resign. In a statement, Smith called his actions “shocking, painful and inexcusable” and said he would accept any “further consequences” the Academy may yet decide on.

“The list of those I’ve hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, everyone present and the global audience back home,” Smith continued.

“I betrayed the academy’s trust. I deprived other nominees and winners of the opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. My heart is broken.”

Smith added, “I want to bring the focus back to those who deserve recognition for their accomplishments and allow the Academy to go back to the incredible work they do to support creativity and artistry in film.”

His statement concluded: “Change takes time and I am committed to doing the work to ensure I never again allow violence to overtake reason.”

Smith’s retirement comes after the actor took to the stage during the Oscars and slammed Rock after the comedian made a joke about Smith’s wife and colleague Jada Pinkett Smith.

“Jada, I love you. GI Jane 2He can’t wait to see you,” he joked in an apparent reference to the actor’s shaved head.

Pinkett Smith – who revealed last year that she shaved her head after battling alopecia – was seen in the audience with her husband and rolled her eyes at the joke.

After Rock’s comment, Smith got up and continued to the stage.

“Uh oh…” Rock was heard to utter. Smith then continued hitting Rock and then walked off the stage back to his seat.

“Will Smith just blew my mind,” Rock said, looking visibly shocked at the moment.

Smith was then heard to yell, “Keep my wife’s name out of your friggin’ mouth,” to which Rock replied, “Wow… dude. It was a GI Jane to kid.”

“Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth,” Smith yelled again. “I’ll…” replied the comedian, who seemed nervous at the interaction.

“It was the biggest night in television history,” Rock said before presenting the award for Best Documentary.
