It was revealed that Will Smith was asked to leave the Oscars after violating the Academy’s code of conduct, but declined.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has now instituted “disciplinary proceedings” against Smith after he punched comedian Chris Rock during the March 27 ceremony in Los Angeles.

“The Board of Governors today began disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s standards of conduct, including improper physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior and endangering the integrity of the Academy,” read a new statement. “At the next board meeting on April 18, the Academy may take any disciplinary action, which may include suspension, expulsion or other sanctions.”

It added that “Mr Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize that we could have handled the situation differently.”

In the statement, the Academy apologizes directly to Rock, as well as to nominees, guests and viewers at Sunday’s Oscars.

Consistent with the Academy’s standards of conduct and California law, Mr. Smith will be given at least 15 days’ prior voting on his violations and sanctions and an opportunity to be heard first by written response. At the next Board Meeting on April 18, the Academy may take any disciplinary action, which may include suspension, expulsion, or other sanctions permitted under the Bylaws and Standards of Conduct.

Mr. Smith’s actions at the 94thth Oscars were a deeply shocking, traumatic event to witness in person and on television. Mr Rock, we apologize for what you experienced on our stage and thank you for your resilience at this moment. We also apologize to our nominees, guests and viewers for what happened during a celebratory event.

Things developed in a way that we could not have foreseen. Whilst we would like to clarify that Mr Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and declined, we also recognize that we could have handled the situation differently
