RUSSIA’S attack on Ukraine caused devastation and unrest in neighboring countries.
Will Russia invade Poland?
Weapons and other military supplies were transported through Poland by the US and other allies.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson even traveled to Poland on March 1, 2022 talk about the Russian attack.
He said: “Dozens of nations have rejected the easy option of sitting on the sidelines or pursuing policies of calculated indifference, choosing instead to take a stand and knowingly risk retaliation from the Kremlin.
“They understand the stakes:
“You know that if Putin manages to trample on Ukraine, his imperial ambitions would not end at the borders of that country.”
Russia has responded to Western aid with threats and nuclear strikes if the West continues to help Ukraine.
Poland’s President Andrzej Duda has expressed concerns that such use of his country could open them to attacks.
A deployment of Russian troops was also sighted along the border between Belarus and Poland.
What happens if Russia invades Poland?
Unlike Ukraine, Poland is a Nato Country that stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
The treaty states that if a member state is attacked, all others must come to its aid and fight at its side.
Some NATO members have already issued one Article 4including Poland, which means all members need to discuss the risk of a Russian attack.
That means if Russia or any non-NATO countryattacked Poland, every member of the organization would launch a counterattack.
There are 30 NATO members including the UK, US and Germany and many others awaiting recognition.
Ukraine is one of the countries waiting to be admitted to NATO, but Putin previously requested that it be denied membership.
Although many countries have supported Ukraine, they have avoided military action wherever possible.
If Russia moved on to Poland, military action would be offered automatically, meaning Britain would go to war.
How close is Russia to Poland?
Poland borders Ukraine, Lithuania and Belarus – an ally of Russia – as well as the Russian semi-enclave of Kaliningrad.
Russia itself is almost 5,000 km (3,000 miles) from Poland.
Kaliningrad Oblast, formerly known as Koenigsberg, was part of Prussia but became an exclave of the Russian Federation when the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991.
An exclave is a state or territory geographically separated from the mainland and surrounded by other states.
With Russian troops already in Ukraine, which borders Poland, there is a possibility that Poland may also be in Putin’s sights.
