Drive into the danger zone – from Hollywood’s editing room floor.
Grammy-winning and Oscar-nominated singer-songwriter Kenny Loggins announced Tuesday that he had re-recorded the 1986 hit “Danger Zone” for Tom Cruise’s new hit “Top Gun: Maverick.”
However, the song was dropped from the final cut.
According to Loggins, 74, he re-imagined the song to take audiences back to the world of ‘Top Gun’ — but Cruise, 59, wanted to continue with the nostalgia of the original film, Entertainment Weekly reported.
Director Joseph Kosinki – who helmed the record-breaking blockbuster sequel – said the decision to go with the original version was to reassure audiences that it was in good hands.
“I wanted to tell you in the first few minutes that this is a ‘Top Gun’ movie, we love it as much as you do,” said Kosinki, 48, in a previous interview. “Our story goes in a very different direction from there, but I wanted viewers to know in the first few minutes, don’t worry, we love him too, this is going to be a Top Gun movie.”
Meanwhile, Loggins said he only found out that “Danger Zone” wasn’t used in April
“When I saw Tom Cruise on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ About six years ago I knew he had the property at that point,” Loggins told the outlet. “I said, ‘So tell me, is ‘Danger Zone’ in or out?’
Cruise Loggins reportedly said that it wouldn’t be a Top Gun movie without the song and that it would definitely be in the movie. He was true to his word, although it was not confirmed at the time where the song – or which version – would be played back then.
Finally, Fans heard Loggin’s old-school rendition as Top Gun: Maverick soared to the top of the box office.
“When we first talked about it, they thought it might happen in a scene in the middle of the movie or somewhere near the end where he comes to the rescue,” Loggins said. “Instead, Tom decided to use it at the beginning of the film so it really evokes the energy and excitement of the original ‘Top Gun.'”
Loggins explained that although his new version of the song was never used, he was still very excited that it was in the film.
“It really captures that vibe from the first time [I saw it]36 years ago,” Loggins said.
