PRESIDENT Volodymyr Zelenskyy is best known as a Ukrainian politician, former actor and comedian fighting for his country amidst the Russian invasion.
In March 2022, the politician opened up about his family and revealed that he doesn’t hide the war from his children to help them understand what’s going on.
Who are the children of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy?
President Zelenskyj has been married to the Ukrainian screenwriter Olena Zelenska since 2003.
After tying the knot, the pair welcomed two children together, daughter Aleksandra, 17, and son Kiril, 9.
In March 2022, Zelenskyy told about his children Fareed Zakaria at CNN’s GPA that he wants them to understand what is happening.
“My children know exactly what is happening and I don’t know if it’s good or bad,” said Zelenskyy.
He later added that while he was fighting a war that has already claimed thousands of lives, he has been able to see his family, but they are reportedly staying out of the public eye.
“[My children] are proud of Ukraine, very proud,” Zelenskyy continued.
“They have a sincere hope for our victory. Children believe in victory but they cannot believe in a result in a game like football – like we killed 10 people from Russia and they killed five people from Ukraine. They just believe that good will prevail.”
Speaking about education, Zelenskyy told the media outlet that his children are allowed to see any content that is out there and that he has not censored their information in any way.
“… My children shouldn’t be banned from watching any videos of what Russia has done,” he said. “My son needs to be aware of this, because while my son is alive, it means that a Ukrainian army man is giving his life.”
Before Zelenskyy’s interview, Russia banned the BBC, Facebook and Twitter to block access to the Kremlin’s sites.
Why is Russia invading Ukraine?
In December 2021, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he had no plans to attack Ukraine, but on February 24, 2022 he launched an attack on the country.
It is believed that Putin wants to reconquer many territories lost in the collapse of the Soviet Union.
A month into the war, Putin offered to end the war if Ukraine would give up the city of Mariupol, but Ukraine rejected the chilling ultimatum.
As a result of the invasion, many countries have imposed sanctions on Russia, which have reportedly already begun to hurt their economies.
It is currently unclear whether NATO countries will intervene in the war.
