White House funds technology to avoid censorship and increase privacy

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The White House will launch an initiative on Wednesday to give grants to innovators working on technology to strengthen democracy by developing privacy-enhancing tools. or bypass censorship, a White House official told Reuters.
The winners of the two largest grants will receive a total of $3.75 million, the official said.
The project, part of US President Joe Biden’s December 9-10 “Summit for Democracy,” aims to promote democratic values that “face asymmetries in how actors democracy and autocracy capitalize on and derive value from emerging technologies,” the White House will say in its announcement.
As part of the programme, the US National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will work with the UK to provide grants to promote and promote adopt technology that promotes privacy and protects intellectual property.
The Open Technology Foundation will provide grants to international applicants for technology that enables content sharing and communication without an Internet or mobile connection, with the goal of overcoming Internet shutdowns.
Finally, regional competitions in Democratic countries will identify entrepreneurs who create and develop technologies that promote democracy.
More than 100 world leaders have been invited to the White House Virtual Democracy event, which aims to help stop the erosion of rights and freedoms around the world. China and Russia were not invited.
