What the Russia-Ukraine conflict means for Houston

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – Ukrainian Americans in the Houston area are keeping a close eye on the Russian invasion. It is estimated that many of the 5,000 Ukrainians here have relatives back home who are in danger.

However, even if you think you have no direct contact with Ukraine, the invasion will still affect you.

“In general, uncertainty creates a lot of anxiety in the market, and this can lead to higher prices,” said Dr. Jason Enia, chair of the Political Science Department at Sam Houston State University. . “Over the next few days, how well it is resolved will be what’s important to everyone’s attention.”

Sanctions have been introduced to restrict nearly all dealings with Russia and freeze bank accounts there.

Russia is a major oil and gas producer. While the United States imports very little directly from Russia, the disruption could have a ripple effect and raise oil prices and/or contribute to a global shortage.

Cyber attacks are also a concern. US intelligence officials have warned that banks, businesses or even government agencies in the US could be targets of Russia.

Dr Enia said: “He is also playing this game strategically, where he is using the wrong direction and other types of arguments to get his case out to the Russian public. “When you look at it from afar, you get this confusing mess.”
