What matters is making sure he loses

It doesn’t really subject when advisors to the autocrat Vladimir Putin are deceive him about the failure of the Russian military in Ukraine and the impact of the sanctions on its economy, as Western intelligence services have begun to chant: The real problem is not letting him win.

The information is indeed dubious: if anyone doesn’t have a spy in Putin’s tiny inner circle, it’s informed speculation at best. This thug who’s worked his way up knows all too well how toadies lie. Nor can he be shocked that corruption has deserted his troops poorly equipped on the eve of the war; he knows how corrupt his entire government is. (Here’s how it works he became super rich.)

Also, remember the pre-invasion dog-and-pony show where he had all his advisers publicly say Russia was ready. He has his scapegoats ready.

Hell, western officials admit this coordinated release is mostly an attempt to get Putin to reconsider his war.

But while Russia didn’t win as hoped in the first few days, Putin is still in good shape to achieve the goals he publicly stated ahead of his “special operation”: control of eastern Ukraine and the area containing the already conquered Crimea links to Russia, plus (possibly) Kiev’s commitment not to join NATO or the European Union and recognition of its conquests.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy
The US has encouraged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to strike a deal with Russia as soon as possible.
US President Joe Biden
President Joe Biden discusses the situation in Ukraine after making comments on gas prices.

Making those concessions is up to the Ukrainians: do they want to keep fighting at the cost of more death and destruction to retake territories Russia has already leveled — or make peace now and let Putin get what he wanted most, and knowing he’ll all too likely pocket his winnings and come back for the rest of the country in a few years?

It is the West’s duty simply to provide Ukraine with as much aid as possible. She reports that the White House is urging President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to do so make a deal as soon as possible, because Team Biden is obsessed with the fear that this could trigger World War III, all the more troubling.

The world should pray for peace – but not at any cost. And if we are not ready to fight, then we have nothing to do with urging Ukraine to surrender.
