Growing up in the age of social media sharing, filtering, facetuning, and today’s young people feel immense pressure to portray a beautiful life. Now an app is trying to change all that.
French photo-sharing platform BeReal bills itself as “not another social network” and encourages users to post “real” content.
The app notifies users at random times each day to share snapshots of their activity during a two-minute window. The aim is to give the users’ friends unedited and unfiltered insights into their everyday lives.
“It’s kind of — stop what you’re doing and let everyone know what you’re doing,” said Colby Edmond, a 21-year-old user.
Because there are no likes or follower counts, BeReal’s emphasis on authenticity resonates with teens.
“[Posting to] Snapchat and Instagram sometimes seem like a competition because of likes and how many views you get. Tiktok too. It’s kind of different on BeReal because there’s no such thing,” said Serenity Wiggins, 18.

Experts believe BeReal has the potential to help children who may be struggling with self-esteem and anxiety issues.
“Any social media app that encourages authenticity and also limits the time you are around is valuable in my opinion,” said Dr. Janet Taylor, a psychiatrist.
The app isn’t without its critics, however, as some users note that it sends out notifications at inconvenient times like funerals, surgeries, and breakups. BeReal offers the opportunity to silence them.
“It can be really weird at times, but I think it’s all the fun of the app,” Edmond said.
So what should parents know to keep their kids safe on BeReal?
“When a child is exploring a new app, a learning moment is to remind them of your own family rules about social media and engage with them,” said Dr. Taylor.
As with any social media app, parents should also be aware of what their kids are posting and watching.
