The volume of incoming messages on chat applications can sometimes be overwhelming.
Whether it’s a family group you’re having a hard time keeping up with or a friend who updates too often, it’s easy to make apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram Direct pretty demanding.
And if you’re the one sending these messages, you might be afraid that you’re annoying even if you have something to say.
So, how do you find the middle ground to communicate something that’s unimportant now but worth reading later, without being annoying?
Thankfully, it looks like Instagram is working correctly.
The Meta-owned app has been spotted testing a new feature that will allow people to send so-called silent messages.
In silent mode we mean messages that will not cause notifications.
So you can send something that the recipient will see when they decide to embed in the app, not when you’ve notified them.
It’s a small relief but will certainly be appreciated by busy family or friends who don’t want to hear their phone ping all the time.
How to send silent messages on Instagram
So far, silent message has only been seen in testing on certain accounts, and there is no news on whether it will launch at all.
You can see if you already have it in the Instagram messaging area right now.
It also seems to only apply to groups on the platform.
All you need to do is type @ and an option that says ‘Silence – Don’t notify anyone in chat’ will show up if it’s already on your account.
Don’t forget, there are other ways you can prevent annoying friends from oversharing.
