With just over a month until Halloween is Coming Again, a new trailer for the upcoming Netflix horror fantasy flick Wendel and Wild was revealed. From the minds of The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline director Henry Selick and Get Out creator Jordan Peele comes this original scary tale for a whole new generation with some pretty awesome names. Below, get a first look at Wendell and Wild, which originally began as an unpublished book by Selick and Clay McLeod Chapman.
The Wendell and Wild trailer teases a horrifying story
After 13 years, filmmaker Henry Selick returns with new stop-motion animated film Wendell and Wild. Leading the cast is Lyric Ross, who lends her voice to 13-year-old orphan Kat Elliot. As she battles her personal demons—the eponymous Wendell and Wild (Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key)—she meets a strange cast of curious characters, including demon-busting Sister Helley (Angela Bassett) and her fellow sisters and acolytes.
Realizing that Kat has the ability to summon demons into the living world, Wendell and Wild devise a plan to trick her into freeing her from her prison. Whether they succeed or not remains to be seen, but there are sure to be plenty of laughs and scares along the way.
Speaking about the film in an interview with Polygon, Selick said that while he “likes scary stuff,” he “don’t want to do strong horror.” Nonetheless, he confirmed: “[this movie] can be freakin’ scary.” Judging from his success with The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline, where he was an expert at balancing horror with lighter-hearted aspects, it’s clear that Wendell and Wild are in safe hands.
Wendell and the Wild will premiere exclusively on Netflix on October 28, 2022.
In other news, House of the Dragon Episode 3 introduced Rhaenyra Targaryen’s future husband, and author Neil Gaiman said critics of Rings of Power were either “racist or hadn’t read Tolkien”.
