One property has banned its children from playing outside for fear they might be bitten in a rat-infested property overshadowed by the wealthy.

Local residents say they saw up to 20 of the bugs roaming around and locked their children inside to protect them.

They even get on car engines and have dug in by their homes on the Tanswell estate in Lambeth. South Londonovershadowed by landmarks like the London Eye.

And the video shows a fox picking up a giant dead rat in its mouth. Local residents accused the council of doing little to help.

Grandmother of three Bridget Leonard, 69, said: “They’re everywhere. They run all the way around my apartment.

“The council says it’s resolved, but it wasn’t. They’re in my shed, so I can’t use them. They’re in my hedges, walking over the poles.

“I want to take care of my garden, but I can’t because of the rats. I saw one stick his head out; it looked at me and then went back into the hole.

“We don’t let the kids play out here. We can’t do that with rats everywhere.”

Mum-of-two Raquel Januario, 30, said they need to check their car’s engine when they set off to make sure rats haven’t gotten back in there.

She added: “The Council has let us down. We don’t complain to them anymore because it doesn’t make sense.

“They should help the vulnerable people who cannot help themselves.

“It’s halftime. Normally kids would play outside but I don’t let them outside now. Families no longer feel comfortable playing outside.

“My son used to play soccer with the neighborhood kids, but now they can’t.”

Kindergarten teacher Maira Vaca, 42, added that a giant rat lived in her pipe right next to her front door and can hear it when inside.

And designer Matteo Orletti, 29. And his girlfriend Nelly, 27, both described the topic as disgusting and had swarms of rats in front of their apartment.

Branch manager Nelly said: “You see them every day. It is disgusting. Whenever we are out here, we see them.”

Another neighbor had to give them cardboard just to get to their door to walk over a huge pile of rat droppings.

Caretaker Grace Ephson, 58, said she doesn’t let her three grandchildren, aged eight to 12, play outside, adding: “It’s heartbreaking and just plain awful. I want them to be able to play.”

A Lambeth Council spokesman said: “Rats are a common problem across London and we take any reports of an infestation in Lambeth very seriously.

“Pest controllers visited the property two weeks ago to assess the problem and found a number of rat holes.

“These were quickly baited and refilled. We have also requested an investigation into the drains to determine if there are any issues that need attention.

“We will ensure there is a coordinated approach to deal with the contributing factors such as drainage, waste disposal and regular monitoring.

“Officials will continue to visit the property to ensure these measures are effectively addressing the issue.”
