The 18-year-old jockey lay motionless on the ground and missed a jump as medics rushed in to treat him.

Russell’s partner Peter Scudamore said they initially “feared the worst” when the young driver was taken to hospital.

Thankfully he’s now conscious, awake and even texting his girlfriend, according to Scudamore, but he has a shocking list of injuries.

Russell tweeted that he had two broken ribs and suspected of breaking his back in four places.

She wrote: “From Conner McCann’s mum #getwellsoonConner – Update on Conner McCann following his horrendous fall at Kelso racecourse, I’m sorry it has taken so long but information was scarce, he has been transferred to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary .

“He has two broken ribs, three fractures in his thoracic vertebrae and a suspect fracture in the C6 vertebrae and a tiny fracture in his fibula, thankfully no head injury.

“He needs an MRI on Monday to check his fractured vertebrae and we will then know more about the recovery.

“Conner’s first words to me were, ‘How is Diamond, is my horse okay, are you sure he’s okay?’

“Thank you to everyone who has expressed their concern over Conner’s fall and wished him a speedy recovery. Diamond State is perfect.”

McCann fell at the second hurdle of the 2m5f contest which Romeo Brown won 15-2 for trainer Sue Smith and jockey Thomas Willmott.

Scudamore tells Sky Sports: “I think Conner is better than we first thought.

“We thought at first he might have broken his legs, but he has a broken vertebra and some broken ribs and a cut on his head.

“He texted his girlfriend so he must have composed and been OK to do that. I think it’s better than we first feared.

“He’s in hospital in Edinburgh so we’ll visit him when we’re allowed to. Everyone was concerned. We feared the worst.

“It’s looking better but it’s still serious and he’ll be out of action for some time I think but at least he’s telling us what the injuries are and we can only hope he recovers quickly. “

Claimer McCann had four wins in just 13 runs over hills – and had only returned to racing a day before his crash, having been injured since January.
