In the meantime, Jürgen Klopp compared it to the way Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer have dominated world tennis in recent decades.

The teams have won the last four Prem titles together — City have won three of them.

And one of them will be crowned champion again next month, with tomorrow’s duel at the Etihad sure to tell us a lot more about who that will be.

The message from City’s club captain Fernandinhowho spent eight years at Etihad is clear – everyone else gets used to it better.

The Brazilian, 36, said: “Both in recent years city and Liverpool have made their intentions clear and taken their place above the other Premier League teams.

“Both have reached a tactical and physical level above the other teams and the results they are getting in the league are a testament to that.

“The ambitions of both – in terms of results and goals – are very similar. It is no coincidence that these are the two leading sites.

“It’s a healthy rivalry and I believe both can lead the domestic league for many more seasons to come.”

City are a point clear before showdown and a win would put them firmly in charge of the title race.

The only thing missing from City’s bulging trophy cabinet is the Champions League – which they have eluded despite a decade of trying.

Liverpool managed to win it in 2019 but Fernandinho believes City’s failure to lift it so far shouldn’t detract from what they have achieved. A total of 13 major trophies since the arrival of the first of the modern era in 2011 is an impressive haul.

And Fernandinho explained: “The Champions League is an obsession for any team fighting for this trophy – and it’s no different for City.

“The players, the backroom team, the staff, our fans, we would all like to win it – but success in the Champions League doesn’t define us.

“Nor will it define our work as a team. Our hard work and dedication over the last five years shows who City really is.”

City came tantalizingly close to lifting the trophy last year – but were beaten 1-0 by Chelsea in the final.

With Fernandinho’s future still unclear, he would love to get his hands on this award in Paris on May 28.

He added: “Obviously we want to win and we’re in the quarter-finals again.

“But regardless, the work that our club has done is phenomenal and we will continue like this.

“Since 2016, when Pep Guardiola came on, every defeat in the competition has been used to learn something about ourselves.

“We used it to identify areas where we need to improve in order to grow and move forward again. Without a doubt we have grown as a team now.”

Fernandinho returned to Brazil with the Premier League trophy during the international break.

He visited Sao Paulo where he attended for the first time a community football project run by the Gol de Letra Foundation in Vila Albertina.

Fernandinho then traveled to Londrina – where he surprised his family, visited his old school and football center – and then drove north to Recife.
