Many assumed the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s return to Old Trafford would return the club to its former glory but the Red Devils are still languishing.

The Portuguese captain announced United need to be in the top three worst, but Rooney insists the Manchester giants should be “top of the table”.

United’s record goalscorer also puts pressure on the caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick insists he still needs to find a way to win trophies.

Rooney “Manchester United has to be a top team, not a top three.

“Those are the demands the fans put on you, the demands the club has.

“Of course, they are going through a difficult period but make no mistake, it is a club that has to win the championship.

“It has to be winning titles and that’s the pressure of coming and playing or working for Manchester United.

“That’s the level they need to get back to. I’m sure they’ll do the right thing to get them back there.”

This comes after Ronaldo questioned United’s mentality amid a tumultuous season, including rumors of a dressing room rift.

The star striker also hinted his return could be short-lived as he does not want to be at a club that is fighting “to be sixth or seventh”.

Ronaldo recently said: “Manchester United should win the league, either second or third. I don’t see other Manchester United positions, to be honest, I don’t see that.

“In my eyes, I don’t accept that our mentality is worse than finishing in the top three in the Premier League in my opinion.”

Ronaldo added: “I don’t want to be here at the club fighting to be sixth, or seventh or fifth.

“I’m here to try to win, to compete and I think we [do] competitive, but we are not at our best yet.

“But we have a long way to go to improve and I believe that if we change our mindset we can achieve great things.”
