Last year it was announced that Waterloo Road – a 200-episode school series from 2006 to 2015 – would be returning to BBC One.
We also learned recently that some of the original cast will be returning as well. Angela Griffin, Adam Thomas and Katie Griffiths will all star in the new Waterloo Road revival.
Here’s everything you need to know about the new Waterloo Road series.
Who will be in the cast?
Angela Griffin, who played Kim Campbell in the first five series of Waterloo Road, will return as the new principal of Waterloo Road.
Adam Thomas and Katie Griffiths will also return as Donte and Chlo Charles. Thomas and Griffiths both left at the end of the fourth series. It has yet to be revealed as to which Thomas and Griffiths will appear in the revival, though they will likely be teachers or parents (if they are regulars of the series, that is).
There’s currently no word on whether any of the remaining cast will appear, although you can more or less guarantee that at least one of them will appear at some point. there.
Where will it be placed?
Famously, Waterloo Road is set in Rochdale for the first 7 seasons, before the school moves to Scotland (somehow with most of the staff and students with it).
The new series will once again be set in Greater Manchester. How they will tackle school moving to Scotland and then back again remains to be seen.
Why is Waterloo Road back?
There are a few reasons for that. This is partly due to the BBC’s obligation to make TV series that reflect (and are produced in) all regions of the UK – with two hospital dramas set and made in the South of England, the new General manager Tim Davie stressed the need to make more TV series in the North of the UK.
The result is, City of Holby was canceled – its final episode will air in March – and Waterloo Road has been brought back. The new Waterloo Road series will be made in Manchester, where the show begins (before moving to Scotland for the series finale).
The reason why Waterloo Road in particular is returning, rather than another new TV series or return, is because it was already so popular during filming. Waterloo Road was the sixth most streamed show on iPlayer throughout 2021, with 45.3 million views – ahead of Doctor Who, Died in paradiseThe Serpent, and Ru Paul’s Drag Race.
When does the new Waterloo Road series begin?
We don’t quite know that yet – however, we do know that filming has begun and that they are working on thirty episodes as part of the new Waterloo Road series.
