Oprah Winfrey recently had the unique job of passing on the baton to the next generation to portray an iconic character.
Winfrey told “Orange is the New Black” actor Danielle Brooks that she has accepted the role of Sofia in the upcoming iteration of “The Color Purple.”
Winfrey, who is producing the 2023 version of the film based on Alice Walker’s book of the same name, played the famous Sofia in the original 1985 film. The performance earned Winfrey her first Academy Award nomination as How to be the best supporting actress.
In the video shared to both Winfrey and Brooks’ Instagram accounts on Friday, Brooks is surprised that Winfrey showed up for the video conference instead of the film’s director.
“Hey,” said Winfrey, wearing a purple, tight-fitting Brooks suit as she appeared onscreen. Immediately, Brooks gasped and covered his mouth in shock. “How are you?”
“Hi! How are you?” Brooks exclaimed, closing her eyes with emotion.
Winfrey, “represents all things purple,” later reveals to Brooks that she got the job as Sofia.
“I’d be happy to pass any baton from 35 – almost 40 years ago to you and I know you’ll kill it,” Winfrey said with a smile, and pulled Brooks’ audition video onto the tablet.
“Oh my heart is full,” Brooks said emotionally. “Thanks thanks.”
In Brooks’ caption on Friday’s video, she echoes those feelings.
“Blessed to be blessed. First, Thank God. Second, beyond gratitude @oprah for entrusting me to play, once again, the power of this one woman,” Brooks wrote. . “She stepped into that role and helped change so many lives. I vow to do the same.”
She added that “the journey to get to this moment has been humbling but I wouldn’t change it for the world!!”
“I can’t wait to share Sofia with this next generation!!”
Winfrey said to Vanity Fair earlier this week that while there have been countless actors starring in various iterations of the show over the past 40 years, she believes “we’ve found the best in this particular moment.”
The all-star cast for the upcoming film also includes Fantasia Taylor, Colman Domingo, Danielle Brooks, Halle Bailey, Corey Hawkins, HER and Taraji P. Henson.
Taylor also shared a fun video about herself when she learned that she had been cast as Celie this week.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Winfrey said that “Purple” has been “a medium for magic and purpose in my life” over the years.
“I don’t know anyone who has ever stuck with it and their lives haven’t improved,” she explains. “Everything is rooted in Alice Walker’s original words, really based on love. The love of this community. The love of these people. The love of those characters. And that just gets passed on and on and on and on. I can’t wait to see this next development, which isn’t tied to having done it the way we’ve always done. ”
In his post on Friday, Winfrey added that re-imagining the classic film and musical was a “challenging, but we as producers felt ready to take on the team.” that we have assembled.”
Blitz Bazawule, also known as Blitz the Ambassador, was chosen to direct the film. Winfrey said in her post that the new version of “The Color Purple” will hit theaters on December 20, 2023.
