Washington state congressman dies after shooting with suspected assault

A Washington state sheriff’s deputy died Wednesday after being wounded in a shootout with a man wanted for a previous assault, authorities and a report said.

Dominique “Dom” Calata, 35, was one of two deputies from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department who were shot dead Tuesday afternoon during the chaos at a RV park near Spanaway. The Seattle Times reported.

MPs joined local authorities with the South Sound Gang Task Force to arrest the suspect, who is wanted on a warrant for second-degree assault, the report said.

Gunfire erupted and Calata and Sgt. Rich Scaniffe, 45, was injured in the shooting.

Calata, an Army veteran who had been with the sheriff’s department for over six years, died Wednesday from his injuries, authorities said. He was married and leaves a young son.

The suspect was also killed in the shooting.

Scaniffe, a 21-year veteran of the department, underwent surgery and was in stable condition.
