Warzone Mobile is codenamed “Project Aurora” and is in early testing

A Warzone Mobile battle royale game has been rumored for months, and finally Call of Duty developers have responded to the speculation, confirming that a title called “Project Aurora” is in development.

A handheld version of Warzone has been a mainstay of the CoD rumor mill in 2022, with competitors BR Fortnite and Apex Legends already competing with CoD Mobile.

Activision has confirmed CoD Mobile as one of its biggest growth areas in terms of its player base, previously stating that there are almost as many Call of Duty players playing on smartphones as there are on consoles and PC. On March 10, they also indicated that a Warzone Mobile offering was in the pipeline.

On May 11, they doubled down on the claim with the announcement of “Project Aurora” – a codenamed shooter title suspected by members of the community is becoming a Warzone spinoff.

CoD Mobile Gameplay

CoD Mobile has been around since October 2019. Next up is Project Aurora.

“The game is still in development and we are in the middle of our first gameplay test in the Project Aurora Closed Alpha. The Closed Alpha is limited in size and with that we just want to start improving tuning, stressing matches, identifying and fixing bugs, and gathering feedback and insights on all aspects of the game as new features come live.”

While it’s not Warzone Mobile by name, members of the CoD community could see this as the first step towards confirmation for smartphones – particularly given the reference to Reddit/YouTube speculation in the statement.

Project Aurora has no release date at the time of writing and has entered a phase of closed alpha testing since May 11th.

Can you sign up for the Call of Duty project Aurora Alpha?

However, we will be opening things up and adding more players during the Closed Alpha phase and beyond as we hit development milestones. Keep an eye out for updates on this in these posts or in future communications regarding the official announcement of the game.”
