WARNING DAY: Heavy storms are rolling through Saturday morning

RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) – Saturday’s severe weather threat increased for parts of central North Carolina. Most counties along and east of the I-95 corridor are now at elevated risk, which is 3 out of 5.

Saturday remains a CBS 17 Storm Team Alert Day.

SCHEDULE: Saturday morning between 4:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m

Isolated strong to severe storms are possible early Saturday morning when a strong cold front moves through central North Carolina.

Our entire area is at risk of a severe storm. Areas east of Raleigh have a better chance of numerous and organized storms where there is an increased risk of strong storms.

The main threat will be damaging winds, but isolated tornadoes are also a possibility. Those at increased risk have the highest likelihood of a tornado.

The timing for each severe weather event will be from 4 a.m. to no later than 10 a.m. as this cold front moves east of central North Carolina. Prime time will be 5am to 8am as these storms will move quickly. Up to an inch of rain is possible during these storms.

There is also a slight chance of light rain or even snow flurries north of the triangle on Saturday afternoon as some residual moisture seeps through to the back of the system quickly.

The second half of the weekend will be dominated by freezing temperatures. Sunday morning lows tumble into the low 20s.

Sunday remains dry but cool before a big warm up next week which will have us in the 60’s and 70’s mid-week.
