War between Russia and Ukraine: Texas A&M University grants its Ukrainian students free tuition, room and board

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Ukrainian students at the 11 campuses and research centers of the Texas A&M University System will receive free tuition starting next semester, Chancellor John Sharp said Tuesday.

The university system covers all tuition and fees, as well as certain living expenses for the students. At least 14 students from Ukraine have so far been identified as eligible for financial aid, Deputy Vice Chancellor Tim Eaton said. The number is likely to increase as more students are identified, he said.

The move is part of the university’s response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Earlier this month, Texas A&M announced that it would sever research ties with Russian institutions and may do the same with study abroad and faculty exchange programs in Russia.

“Our students from Ukraine are in a unique, sad and difficult position as their homeland is under attack, their family members are either fleeing for safety or fighting for their country’s sovereignty,” Sharp said in a memo Tuesday to the presidents of the university system . “In many cases, our students from Ukraine will not have homes to return to, and their parents will remain unable to work… or worse.”

Funding for the new initiative will come from the university system’s Regents’ Grant program, which is designed to help students who have been through disaster, Eaton said. Established in 2018 to help victims of Hurricane Harvey, it plans to give away up to $30 million over 10 years.

“I’m sure you will agree that the devastation our students and their families are facing qualifies them for this help,” Sharp said.

Sharp’s memo also says the university system will open its facilities to accept displaced Ukrainian professors and students so they can continue their work and research in Texas.

“The Texas A&M University System will not stand by and support Russia as Putin continues his illegal and immoral assault on Ukraine and its people,” Sharp said.
