A controversial proposal to stage a breakaway competition for the continent’s top clubs – like Bayern – was unveiled last year and then quickly shelved after widespread backlash across football.

Bayern was not among the 12 founding members who proposed and have the idea publicly opposed it.

Retired Liverpool legend and now Sky Sports pundit Carragher is one of many who have slammed the plan.

And after Unai Emery’s underdog threw out six-time champions Bayern with a Champions League elimination Dramatic victory on TuesdayCarra said it underscores the folly of assuming there is a sedentary elite.

He tweeted: “What a result for Villarreal and another reason to show why the Super League was bulls***.”

The ESL project was potted last year just days after his announcement after fans protested football fat cats.

The proposed breakaway tournament was left in tatters after the six Premier League clubs that signed up withdrew following backlash.

This was followed by Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid as well as AC Milan.

But the proposal is remered with this year Barcelona president Joan Laporta said last month it was ‘far from being given up’.

Barca, Real Madrid and Juventus bosses are clinging to hopes of a revival.

In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Laporta said: “Give up Super League? No, far from it.

“We are there with Juventus, Madrid, waiting for the other teams.

“The English and German clubs are waiting to see whether it will be a new competition format or an improved Champions League.”
