US plane crashes with 4 on board during NATO exercises in Norway

A US Marine Corps plane with four people on board crashed in northern Norway on Friday while participating in a NATO exercise several hundred miles from the Russian border, officials said.
The MV-22B Osprey was reported missing around 6:30 p.m. local time. According to Norwegian officials, a rescue helicopter and a Norwegian military aircraft spotted the wreckage.
“We saw no sign of life,” said Bent Eilertsen, chief of staff of the Nordland police.
Air rescue efforts were frustrated by poor weather conditions and a ground response was underway, officials said.
“It’s dark, the weather conditions are bad and there is a risk of avalanches,” said Eilertsen.
The Marines confirmed an “incident” involving an MV-22B Osprey aircraft in an opinion.
The hybrid aircraft-helicopter was participating in a NATO exercise dubbed “Cold Response” when it was reported missing.
Thousands of Marines and sailors were among the 30,000 NATO troops taking part in military exercises just 200 miles from the Russia-Norway border. according to the US military news agency Stars and Stripes.

The exercises came three weeks later Russia invaded Ukraine — another European borderland — and marks the largest military exercises in Norway since the end of the Cold War, officials said.
