Unite for Ukraine: Biden administration program allows private US citizens to sponsor Ukrainian refugees

UNITED STATES (KTRK) — Uniting for Ukraine, part of the Biden administration’s plan to allow up to 100,000 Ukrainian refugees into the United States, is a program that allows private individuals to sponsor a Ukrainian refugee displaced as a result of the Russian invasion.

The program went live Monday afternoon on the Department of Homeland Security’s website.

“It’s based on our humanitarian parole path,” said Curtis Ried, senior director of the National Security Council. “That (comes) with work permits.”

Americans wishing to sponsor a refugee must apply through the DHS website. Potential sponsors must demonstrate they have the financial capacity to provide assistance and pass a rigorous background check.

As of February 11, Ukrainians wishing to come to the United States under the program had to be residents of Ukraine, already have a sponsor, and undergo background and health screenings.

Everyone involved must be up to date on vaccinations, including the COVID-19 vaccine.

Uniting for Ukraine is not a route to citizenship, but a temporary solution for up to two years.

“We really tried to develop a program here that meets the needs of the Ukrainian population,” Ried said. “They want to seek shelter somewhere and hope to go home to Ukraine soon.”

United Nations data shows that since February 24, over 5.2 million Ukrainians have fled the country, with the majority going to neighboring Poland.

Ried did not have an exact number of refugees coming into the United States, but said many came over the southwestern border.

According to US Customs and Border Protection, more than 3,000 Ukrainian refugees were detained along the border in March.

Under the Uniting for Ukraine program, those attempting to enter the United States via Mexico without prior authorization will be denied entry and encouraged to apply through this new initiative.

Anyone wishing to sponsor a refugee must know the person’s name before applying.

Ried suggests speaking to nonprofit organizations with ties to Ukraine if you want to connect with a refugee.

“(There are) many Ukrainian-American organizations trying to make some of these games possible,” Ried said.
