The bridge the family hoped to cross had been blown up by Ukrainians to try to stop Russian forces advancing into Kyiv, the Times reported.

According to reports, about a dozen Ukrainian soldiers were near the bridge when the explosion went off on Sunday, not to fight but to help civilians cross and carry their luggage.

Soldiers, civilians and medics rushed to help after the attack, which sent people into hiding unsure if the attacks would continue.
