Tearing video and photos on Sunday showed terrified crowds fleeing the small Kiev suburb of Irpin – as well as a dead local mother and her two children – in the midst devastating Russian bombing raids.
footage of the scene published by the New York Times shows a damaged bridge that residents ran across to flee the heavily contested area.
The video begins with a speech by an army man – then suddenly a massive explosion hits the street, causing clouds of smoke and dust and shocking and terrifying witnesses.
One photo showed a mother and her two children dead on the sidewalk after an Irpin attack. Her father, who was lying next to them, had a pulse when the picture was taken, but his current condition is unknown.
The bridge the family hoped to cross had been blown up by Ukrainians to try to stop Russian forces advancing into Kyiv, the Times reported.
According to reports, about a dozen Ukrainian soldiers were near the bridge when the explosion went off on Sunday, not to fight but to help civilians cross and carry their luggage.
Soldiers, civilians and medics rushed to help after the attack, which sent people into hiding unsure if the attacks would continue.
In one photo, a man is lying on the sidewalk with a blanket over his body and his suitcase still by his side. Others show soldiers providing assistance and people lying on the sidewalk.
Meanwhile, five people were killed and one wounded by Russian gunfire at a checkpoint in the small village of Yasnohorodka on the outskirts of Kyiv, Ukrainian officials said.
Russia has claimed it does not attack civilians.
The attack in Irpin comes amid efforts to create a “green corridor” of security at least in the southern port city of Mariupol, which has been devastated by Russian attacks. Plans for the security corridor fell through after ceasefire plans fell apart.
The war has already caused more than 1.5 million people to flee Ukraine to surrounding countries, leaving millions of Ukrainians internally displaced.
