Even as they joked last week that Russian troops were withdrawing from eastern Ukraine so quickly that soldiers were leaving behind caches of weapons and ammunition, Ukrainian officials are quietly lobbying the US for arms, according to a report.
According to a report in Friday’s Politico, Ukrainian government officials are still behind the scenes seeking Patriot air defense systems and F-16 fighter jets for their fight against Russian forces and brokering long-term funding deals to achieve their goals.
Although Ukraine had openly sought high-powered weapons from the US since hostilities began in February, the shift from a public to a private campaign came “as advisers became increasingly concerned that the requests for high-powered weapons were a distraction from Kiev’s more immediate needs.” on the battlefield and concerns that the requests were messing up their tightly written message,” the magazine reported.
As Russian troops left parts of eastern Ukraine last week, including key Russian supply centers, Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to Ukraine’s interior ministry, joked about the stockpiles of weapons they had left behind.
“Today our military in Izyum accepted the first lend-lease shipments from Russia (this is a joke, of course. I’ll mark my jokes for a while now),” he wrote. “Russian soldiers fled so quickly they left half their equipment behind.”
