The First Lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska, and the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, reportedly met at Buckingham Palace on Sunday.
The high-profile performance came a day before Queen Elizabeth II’s scheduled funeral. Zelenska, wife of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, traveled to the UK to represent her war-torn country at the funeral procession amid months of war with Russia.
photos posted on social media show Middleton and Zelenska, both dressed in black and sitting facing each other on checkered armchairs.
Another photo posted Sunday showed Zelenska, Ukraine’s Ambassador to the UK Vadym Prystaiko and two others looking at the Queen’s coffin.
The somber pictures emerged when King Charles III. hosted a reception for dignitaries from around the world at the palace.
Last week, Zelenskyy visited the British Embassy in Kyiv to pay tribute to the late Queen, including signing a book of condolences, according to a photo posted to Twitter by the British Ambassador to Ukraine.
“I am deeply honored [Zelensky] signed our condolence book #Queen Elizabeth II this morning. I’m grateful to the President for taking the time to do this, given everything else that’s been happening in [Ukraine] at this time,” Ambassador Melinda Simmons wrote.
Shortly after the Queen’s death Zelensky tweeted: “It is with deep sadness that we learn of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
“On behalf of the people of Ukraine, we offer our sincere condolences to the entire United Kingdom and the Commonwealth for this irreparable loss.”
