American life expectancy drops to its lowest level since World War Two in 2020, multiple sources say.

Life expectancy drops from 78.8 years in 2019 to 77 years in 2020, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), NBC News report.

Men’s life expectancy fell 2.1 years from 76.3 in 2019 to 74.2 in 2020, NBC News reported. The average life expectancy of women decreased by 1.5 years from 81.4 in 2019 to 79.9 in 2020.

Adjusted mean age mortality increased by nearly 17% during this time period, reaching 835.4 deaths per 100,000 people in 2020, according to NBC News. In 2019, there were only 715.2 deaths per 100,000 people.

Mortality rate increased for all age groups other than children from one to 14 years, while COVID-19 becoming the third leading cause of death in the country in 2020, The Washington Post report. COVID-19 is the underlying cause of death for 350,831 people in 2020, accounting for about 10.4% of all deaths.
