The world was shocked when Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made the decision to step down from the British royal family in early 2020.
Heading to California to start their new lives away from British cameras, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex needed a place to live.
Actor Tyler Perry first gave them sanctuary, and now he’s open about the toll the move has taken on them.
“It’s been a very difficult time for her,” Perry, 53, revealed during a recent appearance on Today with Hoda & Jenna.
The Madea creator continued, “What I know about these two that I wish the world knew is how much they love each other – these two people love each other.
“They found each other – despite all these odds against finding each other, they found each other. The love they have is really, really moving and I just wanted to do whatever I could to support them.”
He continued, “If I don’t have what she and Harry have, I don’t want it — that’s really amazing.”
The Invictus Games founder, 38, and the former actress, 41, moved into the entertainment mogul’s $18 million Los Angeles apartment in May 2020.
They settled into Perry’s mansion while he was out of town in Atlanta to resume production at his studio and work on his next project.
Shortly after their move, the couple also hired the “Alex Cross” star’s security detail to help them with this new transition. The lovebirds were reportedly introduced to Perry by mutual friend Oprah Winfrey.
In a recent interview with The Cut, Markle revealed how Perry reached out to her in 2019.
Perry called her to say he was praying for her “and that he understood what that means,” referring to her big role in the royal family.
“He could only imagine what it was like,” Markle recalled, adding that he advised her to call him if she ever needed support.
“Sometimes you can tell your life story to a stranger on a plane, as opposed to some of the people closest to you,” she said.
The couple later bought their own home in Montecito, California — where they now live with their two children, Lilibet Diana and Archie Harrison.
Perry has remained friends with the duo and even paid tribute to Markle with a heartwarming Instagram post on her birthday last month.
“I’ve had a front row seat in your life for the last few years. I’ve seen you endure things that would have broken many people,” the New Orleans native captioned a photo of Markle playfully kissing a young girl’s hand. “I am so incredibly proud to see how happy you, your husband and your children are now. It fills me with joy to say Happy Birthday to Princess Meghan.”
